Formentor
Formentor
is a delightful peninsula that sticks out of the North East of Mallorca
like a donkeys ear. The peninsula is 20km long after a 4 km steep climb,
the Miridor de Mal pass offers an incredible lofty look out over the North
facing sea cliffs. If one is to look back, a rough pot-holed road leads
up to the Talaia d'Albercutx watchtower. The road is not for the faint
hearted but the panoramic 360 degree views or the peninsula, coast and
sea is well worth the scares! This is perhaps the greatest view on all
of Mallorca.
2km further on from the watchtower is a roadside carpark. From here you
can walk to the Platja de Formentor, a golden sand beach with pine trees
and lovely views of the mountains. At the far end of the beach is the
Hotel Formentor, a luxurious hotel which was once visited by the Hollywood
"in crowd"and made Mallorca one of the places to be seen in
the 1930´s. Charlie Chaplin, F Scott Fitzgerald and Errol Flynn
all stayed here during the hotel's glamourous heyday.
At the end of the 20km peninsula is a lighthouse and a coffee shop where
you can relax and gaze at the miriad seabirds that colonise the cliffs
and look back on this wonderful Mallorca landmark.
Other possible visits:
Binissalem: Historical centre, WAX MUSEUM in the Foro de Mallorca.
Pollença: Convent & calvary steps. Pollença
Bay.
