Mallorca Day Trips
Drach Caves (Coves del Drac)
Nearby: Porto Cristo - Manacor
15
minutes walk south of the centre of Porto Cristo you'll find the spectacular
Coves del Drac (Cuevas del Drach). Although known locally for hundreds
of years it was Ludwig Salvador, an Austrian Arch Duke, who first mapped
the caves in the late 19th century. The caves are 2km deep and consist
of 4 humongous limestone chambers the last of which houses one of the
largest subterranean lakes in the world. It is on this lake that, during
the hour long tour, you can witness the strangely unsettling site of musicians
drifting by on gondolas playing harmoniums, of all things. Stalagtites
and stalagmites abound, all very professionaly lit with a multitude of
multi coloured lights that add to the magical unearthly atmosphere.
If, after this visit, you’re not all caved out, 20 minutes down
the road you’ll find the amusingly named Coves de Hams (Cuevas del
Hams) which are smaller than the Drach caves but house similarly floating
musicians.
