Palma

The Language of Mallorca - Mallorquin

The local language of Mallorca is Mallorquìn, an Eastern dialect of Catalan which is spoken from Valencia up to Southern France.

Mallorquin has aspects in common with both French and Spanish but sounds very different to either language.
Mainland Spanish (known as Castellaño) is widely spoken and understood by everybody. There is a high incidence of Spanish speaking immigrants in Mallorca, both from the mainland and from South America so you will find the accents of the locals vary enormously.
In the tourist areas you will have no problem being understood if you speak in English or German but a little bit of Spanish will go a long way and will be much appreciated.
